Timeline of WWII Events
Nuremberg Race Act- On September 15, 1935 the Nazis passed a series of laws that withdrawal Jewish people of German citizenship, political rights, jobs, and property. These series of laws caused the rise of anti-Semitism and segregated Jewish people from German society.
Kristallnacht: “Night of Broken Glass”- On November 9, 1938 the Nazis launched violent attacks on Jewish communities causing broken glass of Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues to fill the streets of Germany. This event was a result of a Jewish youth assassinating a German Embassy Official.
Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact- On August 23, 1939 Germany and the Soviet Union signed a ten year Non-Aggression pact that increased trades between the countries and promised that both sides will not launch attacks on one another; however Adolf Hitler later goes against this pact. Also, the pact contained a secret plan to divide up Poland and Eastern Europe into the “sphere of influence” of Germany and the Soviet Union.
Bombing of Pearl Harbor- December 7, 1941 Japanese troops invaded an American navy base in Hawaii and attacked American ships. The following day America declared war on Japan.
Program of internment- On February 19, 1942 President Roosevelt started to round up Japanese Americans, or “aliens”, who were considered a threat to the U.S. and sent to relocation camps.
Battle of Stalingrad- On August 23, 1942 Hitler sent his Sixth Army south to capture the industrial site, there was nightly bombing and the city was reduced to rubble. However, on November 19, the soviet troops trapped the Germans and cut off their supplies. By February, the Germans had surrendered and were on the defensive.
D-Day- June 6, 1944 was the invasion of Normandy, France led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower. It was the greatest land and sea attack in history.
V-E day- May 8, 1945 was the official surrender signed in Berlin by the Germans
Atomic bomb on Japan- August 6, 1945 the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, killing almost 73,000 people. Three days later, a second bomb is dropped on Nagasaki, killing about 37,500 people.
V-J day- Victory over Japan on September 2,1945 they surrendered to General Douglas MacArthur.
